Isopods and springtails are gaining popularity in the reptile industry for a number of very good reasons. They are natures' janitorial crews! Add them to your home enclosure to create a Bio-Active ecosystem like nature intended. Springtails and Isopods reduce mold, feces, decaying matter, and improve substrate health! All while providing a calcium rich, nutritious snack for your critters to enjoy any time they wish.

Porcellionides pruinosus or Powder Blue isopods, are a hardy species that reproduces quickly once established. Powder Blues are especially fond of leftover cricket legs and mealworm sheds. Add them to a terrarium with messy eaters that don't finish all their food. These isopods are large (for cleaners), active, colorful and extremely fast! They look grey when immature and become a beautiful powdery blue color in adulthood (hence the name!)

Enclosure larger than 10 gallons? If you're looking to breed these isopods outside of a vivarium, we'd recommend keeping them in one of our Cleaner Breeder Boxes for easy care and to ensure the health of your isopods.

Difficulty: Beginner

Size: .5 inches.

Housing: Plastic storage bin or glass terrarium

Food Preferences: Vegetables, dried leaves, grasses, decaying matter

Temp Requirements: approx. 65 Degrees to 85 Degrees. Extreme cold and heat can be lethal

Breeding: Easy - with proper care sub-adults will begin to breed before reaching full size

Substrate: Coconut coir, peat moss, or Reptisoil, slightly moist with a layer of leaf litter

Humidity: slightly humid

Our Isopods are fed a mix of organic vegetables and mushrooms twice weekly. They are kept on coconut coir substrate with moist sphagnum moss to help maintain humidity, provided cuttlebone for calcium, and cork hides for enrichment.

In rare cases, starving isopods may attempt to consume the carapace of freshly molted invertebrates or even gnaw on small or delicate reptiles or amphibians. We strongly recommend providing supplemental food to your clean up crew in the enclosure, such as pieces of carrot or commercial crested gecko food. When in doubt, using dwarf species of isopods, such as Dwarf Tropical Whites, may be a safer option.
